Sunflower Showdown game day parking guide for KU staff

KU vs. KSU, Oct. 14, 2010

More than 50,000 fans will arrive on campus Thursday, Oct. 14 for the 108th Sunflower Showdown between the Jayhawks and the Kansas State Wildcats. The nationally televised game will be at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium.

Because the university will be on fall break, no classes will be affected and many students will not be on campus. However, parking for some faculty and staff will be affected. KU has developed alternate plans to best assist staff and accommodate our guests.

First, to help reduce congestion on campus, regular (non-temporary) staff members will be permitted to leave work one hour early and academic offices may close at 4 p.m. Some facilities will remain open, notably the student health center until 4:30 p.m. and libraries until 5 p.m. (To leave work before 4 p.m., you must use accrued vacation or adjust your work hours within the work week with the approval of your supervisor. If you work at night or hours outside 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., contact your supervisor.)

Second, because certain parking lots will be closed for event parking Oct. 14 – either all day or beginning at 12:30 p.m. – affected employees are invited to park in the Park & Ride lot on west campus and take the free Park & Ride Express. Buses will be added to the route so wait times during peak periods will be 10 minutes or less. Other parking areas along the bus route – Allen Fieldhouse Parking Garage and Lied Center and Daisy Hill residence hall lots – also will be open to all faculty/staff permit holders.

Please view the information below and make your plans for Oct. 14 now. Your patience and understanding is requested and appreciated.

  • The Mississippi Street parking garage will be open to all faculty/staff permit holders until 12:30 p.m. Oct. 14.
  • Yellow permit and residence hall lots are not enforced on academic holidays and will be open to faculty and staff whose regular parking lot is closed.

Park & Ride

The 1,500-stall Park & Ride lot will be open to all faculty/staff permit holders on Oct. 14. (Enter from Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive.) Park & Ride buses will run at 10-minute intervals during peak hours (7 to 9 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.) and at 30-minute intervals during other times (6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.).

Staff may also park in lots along the Park & Ride Express route (No. 41): the Lied Center (intersection of Irving Hill Road and Constant Avenue) or near the Ellsworth and Hashinger residence halls (intersection of Irving Hill Road and Engel). The express also stops at the Allen Fieldhouse parking garage.

Staff are encouraged to park in one of these lots at the beginning of the workday or to relocate at lunch if you usually park in one of the lots closing at 12:30 p.m.
